Pinoys around the world on the things that make a home

Home. It’s a simple four-letter word. At the same time, a million different things come to mind when you really start to think about it.

At WorldRemit, the global money transfer app, we asked Filipinos around the world about what home means to them. We received hundreds of answers, thoughts and photos – and they couldn’t have been more different.

For some, home means doing something worthwhile from the comfort of their living room. In Makati, we visited Ernando ‘Nanie’ Guanlao, whose home has become a library, open to anyone and everyone.

“Free reading to the public” says a big sign in front of his house.

Starting with only 100 books, the 63 year-old former accountant has spent the last fifteen years collecting books for the library. He now piles up more than 1,000 books every year.

“My home, my library. It’s free, for everybody. You’re welcome to drop in, to talk to me, to see me, enjoy my place”, Nanie says. Watch his story:

For Filipinos around the world, the most common idea connected to home - perhaps unsurprisingly - was family. Whether it was pulling your weight in a family-game of tug-of-war, meeting your in-laws, or the kids at home, watching cartoons on TV – thinking of family also seemed to bring back the most vivid images of home.

A photo of your grandparents says it all – comfort, joy, and the memories of a place where someone grew up.
