Pia Wurtzbach, Christi McGarry emotional during double send-off

A few weeks before heading to their respective international beauty pageants, Miss Intercontinental-Philippines Christi McGarry and Miss Universe-Philippines Pia Wurtzbach couldn't help but shed a few tears during their double send-off on Thursday.

"I finally have my own send-off," Wurtzbach cried after pointing out that she has been to many send-offs for fellow beauty queens.

Binibining Pilipinas-International Janicel Lubina and runners-up Kimverlyn Suiza and Hannah Sison also became emotional as they offered messages of support to the departing beauty queens.

"Alam ng lahat ng tao kung gaano po pinaghirapan kung anong meron ka ngayon. Kung paano mo pinakita sa mga tao na iyong kini-criticize sa'yo... you proved them wrong. Kaya mong umabot sa Miss Universe," Lubina said.

McGarry echoed the same sentiments. "I understand her pressure especially because all eyes are on her. I am very proud of her. She does not know this so much but she is my inspiration. She has proved to everyone that she deserves the crown," she said.

Suiza and Sison were also all praise for McGarry, saying she has that something that makes people notice her.

Wurtzbach, meanwhile, said she found an ally in McGarry.

"It feels like meron akong kakampi. Even though we're competing in different pageants, I feel like I have a companion who's going through the same things I am going through... I'm glad we're going through this journey together," she said.

Binibining Pilipinas organization head Stella Marquez-Araneta, a Miss International titleholder herself, told the press and the guests at the event that both beauty queens are ready to represent the country.

It was understandable that both Wurtzbach and McGarry turned emotional during the event since they hurdled through obstacles just to reach this far.

It will be the second time for McGarry to join Miss Intercontinental. She first joined the pageant in 2010, where she reached top 15. When she won the Binibining Pilipinas-Intercontinental 2015 title, a few questioned her eligibility to join. McGarry almost lost the crown, but the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Incorporated (BPCI) later clarified that McGarry is eligible to compete in the Miss Intercontinental 2015 pageant.

It took three attempts before Wurtzbach finally won a beauty title. Her first attempt was in 2013 where she finished first runner up. She joined in 2014 once again but only made it to the top 15. The third try was the charm for Wurtzbach, who was crowned Binibining Pilipinas-Universe earlier this year.
