Should they answer pageant questions in Filipino? Binibining Pilipinas 2015 winners split on issue

Should Filipina beauty queens continue to speak in English when answering questions during pageants?

The winners of the Binibining Pilipinas 2015 pageant are split on the issue.

"Siguro po it's about time to let the world hear kung ano po talaga ang wikang Filipino," said Binibining Pilipinas-Supranational 2015 Rogelie Catacutan in an interview on "News To Go" on Tuesday.

But Binibining Pilipinas-Universe Pia Wurtzbach countered bys saying that English has always been the medium used by Filipina beauty queens when they go to international pageants. For her, it's an advantage since it shows that Filipinos are capable of expressing themselves in the universal language.

"Siguro po para mapakita natin na marunong tayong magsalita ng English. At dahil ang questions naman po sa international pageants ay English din, maybe it's more appropriate to answer in English," she said.

Bb. Pilipinas-Intercontinental 2015 Christi McGarry, for her part, believes that what matters most in the end is the message and not really the medium.

"I don't it matters what language you speak, it is not a requirement for Miss Universe or any other pageant. If you can deliver it in your language [like] Tagalog, it's best to say it that way," said McGarry.

In any case, the beauty queens agreed that the question and answer portion can make or break candidates.

They revealed during the interview that they had to undergo training to develop quick thinking.

Wurtzbach, who joined the pageant thrice before getting the biggest crown, revealed that she keeps a "Q&A notebook" where she writes possible answers to possible questions.  The beauty queens also said that they go to fellow candidates to share their thoughts on certain issues that make be tackled during the Q&A portion. —Trisha Macas/JST, GMA News
