Binibining Pilipinas national costume contest showcases Filipino designers

They may be nervously waiting for the host to call out the names of the top five finalists in the national costume category, but you can't tell based on the smiles on their faces.

The Binibining Pilipinas fashion show held at Smart Araneta Coliseum on Thursday showcased not just the beauty of the candidates, but also the talent of Filipino designers.

All 34 dresses in the National Costume competition were created by local designers: Jontie Martinez, Roland Lirio, Nel Claveria, Lhenvil Paneda, Jun Ilusorio, Frederick Policarpio, Louie Pangilinan, Albert Andrada, Leo Almodal, Cherry Veric, Ariel Alvarez, Chico Estiba, Polly Lagyap, Sidney Eculla, Pablo Mendez, Caramba Bueno, Ivan Raborar, Joel Acebuche, Eric de los Santos, Mak Tumang, Phillip Tampus, Ramon Esteban, John Cliff, Joel Acebuche, Edwin Uy, Kim Gan, Yuri Dela Luna, Hanz Coquilla, and Frederick Peralta.

Candidate No. 28 Hannah Ruth Sison also had a hand in the creation of her dress.

Last month, 2014 Binibining Pilipinas Universe MJ Lastimosa's choice of gown at the 63rd Miss Universe pageant sparked the ire of Filipinos, who targeted the head of the Binibining Pilipinas organization Stella Araneta for the choice of the Philippines candidates to wear a Colombian-made gown.

The Filipino designers drew inspirations from various aspects of the Philippine culture — a handful of the candidates donned modern ternos, and some of them sported tribe-inspired gowns.

Five of them stood out and made it to the finals of the National Costume Competition: Rogelie Catacutan (own designed by Philip Tampus), Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach (gown designed by Albert Andrada), Teresita Ssen Marquez (gown designed by Frederick Peralta), Ina Dominica Guerrero (gown designed by John Cliff Dimaala), and Nancy Lee Leonard (gown designed by Edwin Uy).

The winner will be announced during the Grand Coronation Night, which will be held on March 15 at the Araneta Coliseum. —JST, GMA News
