National Artist Abdulmari Asia Imao passes, 78

The country is mourning the loss of a National Artist in Abdulmari Asia Imao, who died Tuesday morning at age 78.
 
On its Facebook page, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts said Imao was a National Artist for Visual Arts. He would have turned 79 this coming Jan. 14.
 
"A native of Sulu, he is a sculptor, painter, photographer, ceramist, documentary film maker, cultural researcher, writer, and articulator of Philippine Muslim art and culture," it said.

It credited Imao for helping popularize works like the indigenous ukkil, sarimanok and naga motifs.
