PHLPost releases stamps marking CJ Teehankee’s 25th death anniversary

The Philippine Postal Corp. has released a set of commemorative stamps marking the 25th death anniversary of Chief Justice Claudio Teehankee.

On its Facebook page, PHLPost said it will print a limited number of 104,000 such stamps at P10 each.

It said the stamps are available at the Post Shop at the Manila Central Post Office and all regional PHLPost offices.

Teehankee who was appointed Supreme Court associate justice on April 19, 1979, is remembered for his "erudite pen and high integrity," the Ateneo Law School said.

In 1976, he expressed doubts on proposed amendments to the Constitution where then President Ferdinand Marcos would remain in office as "prime minister."

"Justice Teehankee consistently reminded all in his decisions that the Supreme Court stands as the guarantor of constitutional and human rights of all persons within its jurisdiction and must see to it that the rights are respected and enforced. Justice Teehankee’s values and ideals reached its culmination when he was sought to administer the oath of office of President Corazon C. Aquino at Club Filipino in San Juan at 10:00 a.m. at the height of the People Power Revolution," it added.

When he reached age 70, Teehankee was appointed Philippine ambassador to the United Nations. He died Nov. 27, 1989. He is interred at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
