Winners of the 2014 Nick Joaquin Literary Awards announced

Cesar Aquino was named Poet of the Year at the 2014 Nick Joaquin Literary Awards, which were given out at the Ramon Magsaysay Center along Roxas Boulevard on Thursday.

First place was awarded to the short story "Revelator: Like a Thief in the Night" by Michelle Cheidjew. First place prizes include P50,000 and an Acer laptop.

Second place was bagged by Jenny Ortuoste's short story "Wolves I Have Known." Ortuoste won third place during the same awards last year.

Third place went to Maria Amparo Warren's short story titled "Upon the Arrival of the Whale Shark in Manila Bay." She received P20,000 in cash.

The Nick Joaquin Literary Awards is the annual award of literary magazine the Philippines Graphic. They are given to literary output that the judges select as the best works of fiction and poetry for the entire year.

The awards were named after National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin, widely touted as one of the most important Filipino writers in English. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the Philippines Graphic at the time of his death in 2004. — VC/YA, GMA News
