Residents of Cabatuan in Iloilo province are ecstatic over the victory of one of their townmates in the prestigious Mutya ng Pilipinas beauty pageant last weekend.

Many townmates consider Patrizia Garrido Bosco's feat as bringing honor to the town after some 70 years, GMA Iloilo's Jason Gregorio reported Wednesday.

Bosco was crowned Mutya ng Pilipinas 2014 Overseas Communities during the coronation last weekend. She represented the Filipino community in Italy and speaks Ilonggo (Kinaray-a).

Her family is held in high regard in the town, as her great-grandfather, former mayor Juan Garrido, was killed in World War II for resisting the Japanese, the GMA Iloilo report said.

A separate article on independent portal Cabatuan.com said the mayor and his family were massacred by the Japanese in 1944. Barrio Pamuringao was later renamed Barrio Pamuringao-Garrido in his honor.

At this year's Mutya ng Pilipinas, Patrizia was also among the top 10 Best in Swimsuit and Best in Long Gown, and was named Darling of the Press. — Joel Locsin/BM, GMA News
