Concert review: 2NE1 give it their all in Manila appearance

These four girls promised to set the roof on fire and they did.

Composed of CL, Minzy, Bom and Dara (Sandara to her Filipino fans), Korean girl group 2NE1 filled the Mall of Asia Arena last Saturday with so much energy, it was impossible not to stand, jump and sing along to their songs for the entire two and a half hours of their "All or Nothing" concert.

As soon as the lights went down, beats of their opening song "Crush" played and the curtains parted to reveal the members clad in shiny red and gold costumes. The audience's screams became louder as the girls descended the platform stage and the epic night for the Blackjacks—as 2NE1 fans are called—began.

Showcasing their best songs

It was the group's first-full length concert in the country, but not once did their voices falter while singing and dancing the set list composed of more than 20 songs, including their debut single "Fire" and chart-toppers "Lonely" and "I Am the Best."

Their single "Come Back Home" was sung with an acoustic accompaniment, baring the girls' vocal talent. They then switched things up by rocking the stage with a rearranged version of their hit song "I Don't Care," reflecting their vocal versatility.

Heating things up

There is only one solo stage and 2NE1's leader CL proved why she was the Philippine Kpop Convention's Hottest Female for 2013 when she performed "MTBD" (Menbung), a song she cowrote with labelmate Teddy, and "The Baddest Female," while dressed in a sexy outfit and backed up by bare-chested male dancers.

Another much-anticipated performance was the sexy lap dance number for the song "I Love You" and the audience was definitely surprised and thrilled when Dara called on popular local artists Jason Abalos, Joross Gamboa, Sam Milby and Ram from G Force to join them.

The fans also welcomed with a deafening cheer the appearance of the new YG Entertainment's boy group Winner, who sang "Just Another Boy" and "Go Up."

Twinkling lights of support

All throughout the night, the Blackjacks waved their glowing light sticks, showing their support for a group that was also celebrating its fifth anniversary that night.

During the encore, cakes appeared onstage and CL asked the group's managers, dancers and crew up to the stage to introduce them to the fans and give them credit for all their hard work.  The fans also sang "Happy Birthday," with Minzy performing a sexy dance in tune to the song as requested by their leader.

CL said, "I wanna thank you guys for this beautiful night and I hope to see you guys after five years."

Dara, whose showbiz career started in the Philippines, said, "I'm really happy to spend our fifth year anniversary in my second home."

As a special treat, she gave in to the fans' request and sang "In or Out," a song she made popular almost ten years ago.

Can't nobody hold them down

In Korea, where dozens of Kpop groups debut every year, 2NE1 is one group to look up to.  Their talent, hard work and determination scream "girl power" in a business dominated by boy groups. Who knows, maybe we'll see them winning Grammys in the near future. — BM, GMA News

The next stops on 2NE1's All or Nothing World Tour are Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Indonesia (Jakarta), Singapore and Japan.
