Nora Aunor’s ‘Himala’ character to be immortalized in Ilocos Norte

On the very sand dunes in Ilocos Norte where her story played out more than 30 years ago, Elsa from Ishmael Bernal's classic film "Himala" will be immortalized on May 10.

A sculpture of the character played by Nora Aunor in 1982 will be unveiled on Saturday in the area, according to a report by Saleema Refran on GMA News' "Saksi."

Visual artist Gerry Leonardo, a teacher from the Philippine High School for the Arts and famous Filipino visual artist, will craft the fiberglass sculpture, state-run Philippine Information Agency reported.

Along with the unveiling of the statue will be the opening of the Interactive Sculpture Park by another artist, Leeroy New.

"Himala" tells the story of Elsa, a barrio girl who has visions of the Virgin Mary. Her visions cause hysteria in the village amid a drought.

"We're very excited, we're very honored and we hope to welcome Ms. Nora Aunor to Ilocos Norte," said Jun Arvin Gudoy, media communications head for Ilocos Norte's provincial government.

Even the Superstar herself is excited, saying this will be the first time a sculpture to honor a character of hers will be done.

"First time na nangyari kasi sa industriya ng pelikulang Pilipino na magkaroon ng isang rebulto kaya excited ako rito. Doon mismo pinag-shooting-an namin ng 'Himala,' doon nilagay ni Ms. Imee Marcos sa Paoay," Aunor said.

Then-Presidential daughter Imee Marcos had backed the production of the film, as she was director of the Experimental Cinema of the Philippines at the time.

The sculpture will be the latest attraction in Paoay, which boasts of sand dunes and the Himala Festival in Barangay Suba. — Joel Locsin/BM, GMA News
