The 25-year-old Corpuz — a graduate of the University of Visayas and a full-time faculty member of the College of Arts and Sciences in the University of San Carlo teaching Political Science and Social Science subjects — found out about his passing the Bar via some colleagues who called him up while he was checking the list. Bar exam passer and unusual name-haver Habeas M. Corpuz He is the first lawyer in his family, although his name does not necessarily have any bearing on the dream occupation he nourished since childhood.
When asked how he got his name, Corpuz explained in an interview with GMA News Online: "Kasi yung father ko po... sundalo tapos kasagsagan noon ng EDSA revolution tsaka yung coup d'etat [laban kay] President Cory noong [birth ko]. Tinanong po siya ng nurse kung anong name [ko], sabi niya lang po, 'Ah, Habeas!'"
“Hindi ko po ineexpect na ganito yung reception ng media,” Corpuz added.
But embracing his name hadn't come easy, at least at first. Corpuz explained, 'Nung elementary ako, sabi ko, 'Ma, palitan niyo na yung pangalan ko kasi pinagtatawanan yung name ko.''
He said he researched the meaning of his name. “Ang alam ko lang e, 'to bring the body before the court.'”
It was his first time taking the bar exam.
Another Bar exam passer that netizens have taken notice of is 34-year-old Nat King Coles from Eastern Samar State University. Given their names, he and Habeas Corpuz stand a good chance of being, dare we say it, unforgettable. — Vida Cruz and Mark Merueñas/BM/RSJ, GMA News
