New structure, same style for Pasig shopping place Tiendesitas

It became known for its thatched-roof, open-air shopping and dining "villages," but retail and entertainment destination Tiendesitas is revamping its look and structure, starting with the recent launch of its first enclosed, air-conditioned shopping space.

This is its new Fashion Village, which stands two storeys high, with 12,300 square meters of space and 113 basement parking slots.

The decision to switch to an enclosed building was a result of shoppers' suggestions. The Tiendesitas management had received complaints about the heat, which made shopping uncomfortable. Their response was to switch to a fully air-conditioned building with an effective exhause system so that it can still be pet-friendly.

The foyer is spacious and the stores are aligned well. The first floor is shared by furniture vendors and by stalls of bargain clothes, while the second level houses an assortment of small retail brands of collectibles, accessories, apparel and other products.

Noticeable, though, are the still-empty stretches on both floors which have not yet been filled by tenants. Also, during my visit at 2:00 p.m., some stores were still closed for business.

The area is well-lit and restrooms are accessible. There are stairs, escalators and commodious elevators, taking into consideration disabled and elderly guests who use wheelchairs.

And while most food outlets and restaurants are outside, a small ice cream stand and a local café on the second floor provide a place for shoppers to rest and fill up.

Tiendesitas maintains its distinct charm through a novel execution of Maranao architectural elements—as seen in its pavilions, its railings and its ceiling details—and matching these with an indoor-outdoor feel through high ceilings and balconies.

Upon completion of the next two buildings, which are expected to rise in 2016 or earlier, Tiendesitas will have a total of 35,000 square meters of retail space divided into nine retail categories: food, pet, entertainment, general merchandise, handicrafts, fashion, antiques, novelties and people’s village. Currently, the other “villages” are still operational while waiting for the project’s full completion.

Located in the Pasig area, it caters mainly to patrons in the neighboring areas of Quezon City, Marikina and Pasig. For people from the south, travel time is heavily dependent on the traffic. It took 30 minutes to get to the area from Makati via C5 road on a weekday at a little past 1:00 p.m. — BM, GMA News
