Simplicity is the trend on the SONA red carpet

Walking the red carpet alone, Leyte Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez was an image of elegance in a shimmering gray Randy Ortiz terno with floral lace details. To finish her look, she opted for a simple gold clutch paired with diamond dangling earrings and diamond and gold bracelets.

Another vision of elegance was Marga Nograles, escorted by husband Davao City Rep. Karlo Nograles. She looked effortless in a two-tone cobalt blue terno with lace details on the baro made by Davao-based designer Bobby Castillo, with her hair up in a bun to show off a pair of dangling sapphire earrings.

Also a stunner was re-elected Senator Pia Cayetano in a 1950s inspired black and nude tulle gown by Mia Urquico, later switching to a backless dress by the same designer.

Presidential sister Kris Aquino, meanwhile, was a glamorous blaze of red in a gown by Cary Santiago.

The guys also looked their best, with newly elected Taguig Rep. Lino Cayetano eye-catching in his JC Buendia barong and Optical Media Board chairman Ronnie Ricketts looking dapper in his Bergamo barong and Oakley eyewear.

Family matters

Newly elected Senator Grace Poe Llamanzares, the daughter of the late Fernando Poe Jr., embodied purity in her white terno with gold details on the shoulder by Kristel Yulo and Rajo Laurel. She was escorted by husband Neil Llamanzares and son Bryan.

Senator Sonny Angara and wife Tootsie Angara both looked lovely as they walked the red carpet in the Batasan's North Wing. He wore a custom-made barong while his wife glamoured everyone in her two-tone gray Randy Ortiz terno with black lace details on the bust area.

Meanwhile, Senator Bam Aquino was feeling happy sharing the story of his "lucky barong." The senator told the media he wore the same barong on his wedding day. He entered the hall with his wife Timi, who looked stunning in an old-rose Noel Crisostomo lace terno.

Laguna Rep. Danilo Fernando attended SONA with his whole family, with his two sons in barongs and his wife, Sheila and their daughter both dressed in pink ternos by Laguna-based designer Drezzee.

Laguna Governor E.R. Estregan also walked the red carpet with his wife Girlie. They both looked the part, wearing the creations of Filipino designer Paul Cabral.

Newly elected Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas also attended the event with his wife Yasmin, who looked romantic in her pink Paul Cabral terno.

Furthermore, controversial couple Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero and actress girlfriend Heart Evangelista were matching in a simple white terno for her and a barong for him.

Wearing their advocacy

While most guests opted for simplicity, some politicians maximized their outfits to shout out their advocacy and make a statement.

Kabataan Rep. Terry Ridon attended SONA is his "sablay," the sash used by University of the Philippines students during graduation, to show his "roots as a student leader and street parliamentarian."

The mural on the sablay depicts Kalayaan leader Andres Bonifacio as a mass leader, leading scores of youth and people's organizations against President Aquino and US President Barack Obama.

Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares wore a barong with a hand-painted design stating "Junk VFA."

Senator Loren Legarda and Risa Hontiveros expressed their love for indigenous fabrics through their gowns. Legarda wore a Bagobo skirt with a T'boli brass belt that accentuated her waist on the red carpet, and later inside switched to an outfit made by the Gaddang people of Mountain Province and Nueva Vizcaya.

Hontiveros, on the other hand, wore a purple terno made of T'nalak, a fabric woven by the T'Boli tribe.
