Beauty queen-activist Maita Gomez laid to rest

On the same day Comedy King Rodolfo “Dolphy” Vera Quizon was buried in Taguig City, another prominent personality was also laid to rest Sunday.

The ashes of former beauty queen and activist Maita Gomez were brought to the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City, radio dzBB reported early Monday.

Gomez, who died in her sleep Thursday at age 64, was cremated.

She had represented the country in the Miss World pageant in 1967, but went underground to fight the then Marcos dictatorship.

Gomez was a founding co-chairperson of the Makabayan Coalition and helped found Gabriela.

“We in Makabayan are proud and honored that she gladly accepted her nomination to co-chair the coalition in 2009, and she consistently and most capably performed her duties until her unexpected demise,” said Makabayan president and former Rep. Satur Ocampo.

He added Gomez “never failed to speak out on the issues being discussed and her points were always well taken – reflective of her intellectual acumen and wisdom, built up from a multifaceted life and deep involvement in our people’s struggle.” –KG, GMA News
