The Official Philippines Chart is finally here!

The Official Philippines Chart is finally here!

The Official Philippines Chart has officially launched in the country!

Its official launch party, held on Wednesday evening in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, was attended by today’s top artists like BINI, TJ Monterde, Hev Abi, Maki, Ben&Ben, Arthur Nery, Zild Benitez, Over October, and many more.

The Official Philippines Chart is a weekly music chart showcasing the top-performing tracks from local and international artists in the country based on streams across major platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, and YouTube music.

More than just a compilation of data, it spotlights the changes in the music industry's dynamics and trends. The chart is announced every Tuesday.

The chart was launched by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and the Philippine Recorded Music Rights Inc. (PRM). It also has regional chart counterparts in Malaysia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Johnson Arul, Senior Regional Market Analyst SEA at IFPI, told GMA News Online at the launch that what makes The Official Philippines Chart different from other music charts is that data is gathered from both sales and streams.

“We are the only charts that actually economically weighed streams, based on actual data that we get from the recorded music labels directly, be it the volume of streams or the revenues from the streams,” Arul said.

“So, using this data, we are actually able to come up with economic building accurately, and that's what really makes our charts stand out,” he added. “Our charts reflect the actual market economics, the other charts may not necessarily.”

Arul added in a speech at the launch party that the charts are a way to celebrate artistry.

“The Official Philippines Chart, what it means is that it's a celebration. That's why we are here today at The Official Philippines Chart launch party, to celebrate the achievements of our artists every single week. That’s what the charts are about,” Arul said.

“Marilag,” the hit song by Filipino R&B star Dionela, was named the first-ever Official #1 track in the Philippines, based on the chart’s first release in January.

It remained the number one track for four weeks, until “Luther” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA took the top spot in the latest chart released on Tuesday.

Following the news of the chart's first release in the Philippines, Simon Seow, Regional Director for Southeast Asia at IFPI, extended his congratulations to Dionela for "Marilag's" feat of being the first song to claim the chart's top spot.

“A huge congratulations to Dionela and everyone involved in making 'Marilag' the first song to claim the top spot of the Official Philippines Chart #1!" he said in a press release. "It is wonderful to see a Pinoy artist claim this milestone, and is a testament to the wealth of talent and artistry in the country. We look forward to reporting on further success and celebrating more artists in the coming weeks and months.”

Meanwhile, Roslyn Pineda, Sony Music Entertainment Philippines, General Manager and PRM Board Member, underscored the significance of the charts during the closing remarks of the official launch Wednesday.

"Numbers don't lie. They tell a story, a narrative that reflects the hard work, dedication, and passion that our artists pour into their craft every single day,” she said in a press release.

“With the transparency and visibility provided by The Official Philippine Charts, we now have a clear picture of who is resonating with our audiences, who is breaking barriers, and who is truly making waves in the music scene. This data is critical; it provides insights that can help us understand the ever-evolving landscape of our industry."

Francis Buen, PRM Head of Licensing, also marked The Official Philippines Chart's launch as "a significant milestone for the music community. It will enable consumers to support their favorite artists further, propelling them to the top of the charts.”

He added that this achievement can push creators, performers, and producers to keep on with their craft.

Sarah Ismail, Warner Music Philippines Interim Managing Director and PRM Board Member, for her part,  emphasized the value of music charts in promoting the Philippine music industry.

"These charts will offer valuable insights and recognition for our local artists, supporting their career growth and reinforcing Philippines' position as an influential player in the global music scene," she said.

The Official Philippines Chart and its regional chart counterparts are managed by IFPI. The charts are built on data prepared by BMAT—a music innovation company that records all music usage and ownership data—in accordance with IFPI’s global charts principles and methodologies. BMAT also collates official streaming charts around the world, and assists music companies improve their data operations to ensure artists get paid for their plays.

In the Philippines, PRM works with IFPI to ensure the accessibility of The Official Philippines Chart. The weekly chart is posted on www.prm.com.ph and all its social media platforms.

IFPI comprises more than 8,000 record company members internationally. Its work involves promoting the value of recorded music, campaigning for record producers' rights, and expanding the commercial uses of recorded music all around the globe.

Meanwhile, the PRM is a non-stock, non-profit, joint music licensing organization that represents its members, who comprise sound producers and performers. Its work entails licensing commercial establishments that play the sound recordings of its members and distribute these royalties to artists and labels.
