Nelson Canlas launches children's book 'Si Migoy, Ang Batang Tausug'

Nelson Canlas on Friday launched his first children's book, titled "Si Migoy, Ang Batang Tausug."

Through this literary work, the GMA Integrated News showbiz reporter and anchor celebrates Mindanaoan heritage, with a particular focus on Tausug culture and cuisine, making it the first of its kind.

Nelson said he was inspired to write the book because he wants children to know more about Filipino culture and cuisine.

At this point in time, a lot of children are not familiar with the Filipino language, and most of them just think that sinigang and lechon are the only Filipino food, he added.

He also wants to promote nationalism.

The book was inspired by the image, personality, and childhood stories of Nelson's husband, Chef Miggy Cabel Moreno, the co-founder and chef of Palm Grill, and an advocate for Mindanaoan cuisine.

For Chef Miggy, this book was a dream come true because he wants his work and their food in Jolo, Sulu to be known.

He also wants more children to be inspired by his life story and the food that he loves to cook.

The story captures and illustrates the nuances, warmth, and lively spirit of a young Miggy, creating a relatable and endearing character for children.

The book, written in three languages — Tagalog, English, and Tausug — is a pioneering effort to promote inclusivity and cultural understanding among readers of all cultures, nationalities, and ages.

It was also co-written by Chef Miggy's sister, Dr. Ma. Isabel Cabel Moreno-Go, who said she was inspired by her children. She also said that with this book she wants more children to go back into reading. —JCB, GMA Integrated News
