LOOK: Jesus Nazareno and Nuestra Señora Del Carmen meet at traditional Dungaw

The image of Jesus Nazareno met His mother Nuestra Señora Del Carmen during the traditional Dungaw on Thursday evening as part of the celebrations for the Feast of Jesus Nazareno.

Jesus Nazareno arrived ahead at Plaza del Carmen, outside San Sebastian Church, and met the Virgin Mary at 5:57 p.m.

His arrival was greeted by the pealing of the bells and the crowd crying "Viva!” with hands raised in the air.

A short prayer then followed.

The Dungaw lasted for about 15 minutes before the Virgin Mary was brought back inside the church.

The procession officially left the Quirino Grandstand at 4:41 a.m., and now makes its way toward the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno or Quiapo Church.

According to the Manila City government, an estimated crowd of 2.2 million attended the Traslacion 2025, as of 2 p.m.

The “Dungaw” rite, also known as La Mirata, is one of the highlights during the procession of Jesus Nazareno, per the San Sebastian Basilica Conservation and Development Foundation, Inc.

In the ritual, the image of Jesus Nazareno makes a short stop at San Sebastian Church to have a glimpse of the Virgin Mary.

It serves as a symbol of maternal love, inviting reflection and prayer on the journey towards the ultimate destination – to be with Mary and her Son, Jesus Nazareno.
