How did the New Year's resolutions tradition start? Kuya Kim answers
As we usher in a New Year, many of us set some goals that we call New Year's resolutions.
But how exactly did this tradition start?
According to Kuya Kim's report on "24 Oras," Wednesday, New Year's Resolutions trace its origins to 4,000 years ago.
It is said that the ancient Babylonians started the practice and they were also the first to hold celebrations welcoming the New Year.
During their New Year celebration, which is held in March when they plant crops, they crown their new king or reaffirm their loyalty to their current ruler.
They also promise their gods to pay off their debt and return the tools they borrowed. Should they fulfill their vows, they will be blessed.
This tradition is considered the forerunner of the New Year's resolutions.
According to Dr. Fernando Carandang, a psychologist, self-commitment and self-discipline are key to achieving our New Year's resolutions.
"Mas maganda kung isinusulat natin, tapos ano 'yung success indicator natin? Maganda kung meron tayong accountability partner. 'Yun 'yung kasama mo sa pagtupad," he said.
