Tanghalang Pilipino's 'Pingkian: Isang Musikal,' 'Balete' win big at 2024 Aliw Awards

Tanghalang Pilipino's "Pingkian: Isang Musikal" and Balete" won big at the 2024 Aliw Awards.

According to the resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, "Pingkian: Isang Musikal" was awarded Best Musical by the award-giving body.

Its lead actor, Vic Robinson, who played the role of Jacinto, also bagged the Best Lead Actor in a Musical award, while Marco Viaña, also among the musical's cast, won Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

Moreover, award-winning composer Ejay Yatco was recognized as Best Composer for Original Musical for his work on "Pingkian."

The musical, which ran during the first quarter of the year, brought to life the unyielding, patriotic spirit of Emilio Jacinto and his fight for freedom, showcasing his writings and life story.

With Jacinto's series of flashbacks to his past, the musical tells the story of how the young Katipunero became a revolutionary hero.  

"Hindi Pa Tapos ang Laban," "Nasa Loob ang Himagsikan," "Pangarap Ko'y Kalayaan," and "Kalayaan" were just among the powerful songs in the musical.

"Balete," Tanghalang Pilipino's first play for its 38th season "REVOLT," also won Best Play at the 2024 Aliw Awards.

Lead actor Nonie Buencamino was hailed Best Lead Actor in a Play, while Chris Millado won Best Director for a Play.

Here are the other theater awardees:

  • Best Lead Actress in a Musical - Karylle Tatlonghari-Yuzon for "Little Shop of Horrors"
  • Best Director for a Musical - Toff de Venecia for "Little Shop of Horrors"
  • Best Featured Actress in a Play - Shamaine Buencamino for "Grace"
  • Best Featured Actress in a Musical - Carla Guevarra Laforteza for "One More Chance"

Several Kapuso personalities also emerged victorious at the 2024 Aliw Awards.

Julie Anne San Jose was named Entertainer of the Year. The Sparkle star, alongside SB19's Stell,  also won the Best Collaboration in a Major Concert award for their Julie X Stell concert.

Meanwhile, Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes's daughter Zia was recognized as Best Female Child Performer for RMA Studio Academy's "Be Our Guest."

Newly minted Sparkle actor Gian Magdangal bagged the Best Group/Ensemble Performance in a Concert award for his performance of "The Greatest Duet" with Lara Maigue.

Lastly, in "The Boobay and Tekla Show," Super Tekla was hailed as the Best Stand Up Comedian.

The awarding ceremony was held on December 18 at the Manila Hotel Fiesta Pavilion.
