Bobby Garcia, multi-awarded director and producer, passes away

Director and producer Bobby Garcia has passed away. He was 55.

Garcia's family confirmed the news to Boy Abunda through a statement, which the host announced on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda" on Wednesday.

The Kapuso host remembered the multi-awarded director as one of his best friends.

According to him, Garcia’s family thanks his friends for understanding their desire for privacy during this very difficult time.

“Kami po'y nakikiramay sa pamilya at sa mga mahal sa buhay ni Bobby Garcia. Bobby was one of the most beautiful persons inside and out na nakilala ko po sa tanang buhay ko. You will be missed, and wherever you are, I know you’re in heaven. But Bobby, I want you to know that you’re loved. Maraming, maraming salamat,” said Abunda.

Garcia founded the theater company Atlantis Productions, and co-produced “Here Lies Love” on Broadway. He also directed “Request sa Radyo” starring Dolly De Leon and Lea Salonga this year.

He last directed Request Concert for Theatre Group Asia.

According to his website, he has directed more than 50 plays and musicals in Canada and Asia, and served as an associate director for Miss Saigon (2000/2001).

He also led more than 65 productions in the Asian region as a producer, with his productions garnering nominations at the Tony, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle Awards.

Garcia earned a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Directing for Theatre from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelors Degree from Fordham University in New York.
