Filipina conservationists Ann and Billie Dumaliang among TIME’s 2024 Next Generation Leaders

Filipina conservationists Ann and Billie Dumaliang among TIME’s 2024 Next Generation Leaders

Filipina conservationists and Masungi Georeserve cofounders Ann and Billie Dumaliang are among TIME Magazine's Next Generation Leaders of 2024.

The are the only Filipinos in the list of 10 trailblazers from around the world, which include Bridgerton actress Nicola Cooughlan, American Olympian Simone Manuel, and Chonthicha 'Lookkate' Jangrew, the Thai activist-turned politician.

TIME described the Dumaliang sisters as steadfast in their fight for Masungi. "The Dumaliangs and their more than 80 rangers haven’t been deterred by physical or legal threats—whether from property developers, poachers, loggers, or the government," TIME said, pointing out the government's plan to cancel the 2017 agreement between the Masungi Georeserve Foundation and the DENR to run the 2,700 hectares of degraded watershed areas.

"The sisters are open to renegotiating with the government, but they also say they’re more than ready to take their battle to court," TIME said.

"In a country often resigned to complacency, the Dumaliangs are proud that by being 'very deliberate, very committed,' Billie says, they can serve 'as an example or model of what is possible,' TIME said.

On Instagram, Ann said "I am honored to be named as one of the 2024 @time Next Generation Leaders together with Billie."

"It is an immense priviledge to stand alongside leaders who are shaping a better tomorrow, and we’re eager to get to know them even more. This recognition isn’t just for us—it belongs to everyone who has stood with Masungi, fought for our forests, and believed in the power of collective action to protect our planet," she continued.

Masungi in Rizal has been recognized across the globe, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG) Action Award for Inspire Category in 2022.
