Museum and Galleries Month: Go exhibit hopping at these 5 university museums this October
And just like that, we're halfway through October.
Calendared already which art events to check out to get your culture fix? What about reserved tickets for the upcoming Shorts and Briefs theater festival?
If the answer is not yet, don't fret. There's still plenty of time to savor Museum and Galleries Month, and just as plenty of things left to do.
In Metro Manila, there are some university museums that you can visit if you're hankering to go exhibit hopping, from Adamson University's Art Gallery in Ermita to UP Diliman's Vargas Museum in Diliman.
Here are five university museums to check out, most of which offer free admission on select days this October.
1. The Museum at De La Salle University
The Museum at DLSU Manila is home to varied pieces of Philippine modern art from the Wili and Doreen Fernandez and the University art collections.
A new exhibit to watch for is "BATA: Images of Childhood Memories," which features artworks that illustrate stories of childhood according to the lens of artists from Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan, and works from the museum's collections. The exhibit, which runs until December 6, includes paintings, 3D artworks, original drawings, and more.
In celebration of Museum and Galleries Month, the museum will offer free admission to the public on October 23, 25, and 30. On other days, admission fee for non-DLSU students and local visitors is priced at P25, and P50 for foreign visitors. You may book your visit here.
The museum is open from Tuesdays to Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is located on the second floor of Yuchengco Hall at DLSU, Taft Avenue, Malate, Manila.
2. Adamson University Art Gallery
The Adamson University Art Gallery just launched "Aragbay" early this month.
The exhibit features the unique and diverse works of ArtPalo Group artists Christian Cabillo, Joel Dacillo, Rico Palacio, Archie Prisno, Archie Zabala, and Raul Agner. Every painting and sculpture from the Leyte-based collective's exhibit is also for sale.
Admission is free at the Adamson University Art Gallery, which is located at 900 San Marcelino Street, Ermita, Manila.
3. Ateneo Art Gallery, Ateneo de Manila University
The Ateneo Art Gallery in ADMU offers free admission every Saturday this month and this coming Sunday (October 20) to join the festivities of Museum and Galleries Month!
Visitors can catch ongoing exhibits like "A Synergy of Ventures: The Postwar Art Scene," Transitions and Continuity: Selections from the Ateneo Art Gallery Video Art Collection," "Project Belonging: From There to Here. The Foreign in the Familiar," "GedAze Project's 'Portals,'" "Islands for Sale: Pete Jimenez," and "Recent Acquisitions."
It also offers special guided tours for "A Synergy of Ventures: The Postwar Art Scene" on all Saturdays of October. Those interested may sign up here.
The Ateneo Art Gallery is open from Mondays to Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is located in Areté, ADMU, in Katipunan, Quezon City.
4. University of Santo Tomas (UST) Museum
The University of Santo Tomas Museum will also offer free admission from October 16 to November 14 as a treat this Museum and Galleries Month.
The museum houses various collections, such as coins, medals, ethnology artifacts, memorabilia, natural history specimens, visual arts, and religious images.
It also just launched the "Magic in Metal - The Art of Richard Buxani" exhibit this October in collaboration with the UST Office of Alumni and the UST Atelier Alumni Association Inc. The exhibit runs until November 14.
The UST Museum is open Mondays (10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), Tuesdays to Fridays (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), and Saturdays (by special arrangement).
It is located in the UST Main Building along España in Sampaloc, Manila.
5. Vargas Museum, University of the Philippines Diliman
The Vargas Museum within the University of the Philippines Diliman also enjoins the public to celebrate Museum and Galleries Month.
Visitors can check out the museum's Permanent Art Collection, which features the artworks of women artists Nena Saguil, Maria Iglesias, Carmen Bernabe, Lydia Arguilla, and Pilar Santiago, as well as the reopened "Objects of Study: The PCGG Artworks Collection."
Jon Cuyson's solo exhibit, "Taong Dagat (People of the Sea)," is also on view until November 9.
The UP Vargas Museum is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Rates are P20 for students; P40 for UP staff, faculty members, and alumni; and P50 for non-UP visitors.
UP students, staff, faculty, and alumni may visit the museum for free every Wednesday upon presentation of their UP ID. The museum is located along Roxas Avenue, UP Diliman in Quezon City.
