'Six the Musical' queens on revisiting history through the lens of 'her-story'

Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived!

"Six the Musical," which tells the story of the six wives of English king Henry VIII, has finally arrived this month at The Theatre at Solaire.

Created by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the award-winning musical provides a different perspective on the six queens separate from their status as royal wives.

At a media conference on Wednesday, the queens Billie Kerr (Catherine of Aragon), Yna Tresvalles (Anne Boleyn), Liberty Stottor (Jane Seymour), Hannah Victoria (Anne of Cleves), Lizzie Emery (Katherine Howard), and Eloise Lord (Catherine Parr) shared their thoughts on the importance of revisiting history through the lens of women, or "her-story."

"We are trying our best to do them justice and show everyone what they did for the world and how incredible they are. So I think it's so amazing that anyone can come to the show and watch us tell their incredible stories from the women's perspective," Eloise said.

Liberty said their roles are important in giving each queen a voice to tell her own story.

"Although these women are not here today to tell their story, it's not just us telling their stories and giving them a voice, but it's reminding that everybody has a story worth telling, worth listening to," she said.

Fil-Am actress Yna, for her part, said the show made her think of all the women in her life.

"The song 'Six' at the end of the show, where all six women get the chance to, if they were alive today, ask, ‘How would they have chosen to live their lives instead?’ That makes me really emotional because it’s just an offer, like these women will never be able to come back to life and take the mic and say, 'Actually I would have chosen to do this with my life instead,'" she said.

"This show encourages people to think about their lives and what they want it to look like, and the legacies they want to live, and we have the opportunity now to choose that for ourselves," she added.

"Six the Musical" will be available for theatergoers until October 20. Tickets are available via Ticketworld online and outlets nationwide, with prices ranging from P1,798.60 for balcony seats to P5,078.40 for orchestra.

"Six the Musical" debuted at the Edinburgh Festival in 2017 and premiered in the West End and on Broadway in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Among the popular songs in the musical are "Ex-Wives," "I Don't Need Your Love," "Six," and "No Way."

It has won 35 international awards, including two Tony Awards and a nomination at the Grammys.
