NCCA kicks off Museums and Galleries Month with flagship art fairs, exhibits nationwide

It's Museum and Galleries Month!

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) leads the annual festivities of Museum and Galleries Month every October pursuant to Proclamation No. 798, s. 1991, with the goal to raise awareness on Philippine art forms and cultural artifacts, and underscore the importance of heritage and culture in nation-building.

The theme for Museum and Galleries Month this 2024 is "Honoring Traditions, Fostering Innovation," which highlights the "balance between preserving the past and shaping the future" in the time of globalization.

The NCCA has pulled out all the stops in this year's celebration of Museum and Galleries Month, partnering with national and local government units and the private sector to stage exciting flagship activities across the Philippines.

Here are five events to check out!

1. Exhibits by the NCCA Gallery

The NCCA launched two exhibits at the NCCA Gallery in Intramuros, Manila, this October.

"Katribu, Kapwa Pilipino" by Alberto T. Magsumbol features the lifeways and customs of indigenous communities through paintings and sculptures made of wood, clay, and paper.

"Creation: A Journey of Discovery for the Divine Self" by HIBLA collective, on the other hand, showcases the wonder of creation through various artists' perspectives.

The exhibits may be viewed at the NCCA Gallery until October 31.

2. ManilART 2024

ManilART 2024, the longest-running visual arts fair in the Philippines, will make a return from October 9 to 13 at the SMX Aura Convention Center, SM Aura in Taguig City.

With the theme "Prisms & Mosaics," ManilART 2024 aims to celebrate "diversity, complexity, and interconnectedness in artistic expressions" in Philippine contemporary art.

Aside from the on-site fair, ManilART 2024 will also have an online exhibit on ManilARTFair.com to reach more audiences.

3. Luzon Art Fair 2024

Those in and nearby Tarlac can check out Luzon Art Fair 2024, which launched on Thursday.

The fair spotlights the diverse artists of Luzon with the aim to strengthen the Luzon art scene through multi-sectoral collaborations with artist-led collectives; professional, emerging and established artists; academics; the business sector, and more.

Luzon Art Fair 2024 will run until October 6 at the Diwa ng Tarlac and Bulwagang Kanlahi, Tarlac City.

4. Tam-awan International Arts Festival

Up north, there's the 14th Tam-awan International Arts Festival! This annual event backed by the NCCA celebrates not just the art and artisan community of Baguio, but supporters of the Tam-awan Vilage and Chanum Foundation, Inc. as well.

With the theme "Empowering the Artist through Community Galleries," this year's Tam-awan International Arts Festival showcases the works of Cordilleran artists and artists across the Philippines and the world over.

The 14th Tam-awan Internatoinal Arts Festival runs until October 6 at the Tam-awan Village in Baguio City.

5. Mindanao Art 2024

Mindanao Art 2024 focuses on "art on the edge," bringing to the fore artworks created from the margins of the Philippines.

It highlights the beautiful art of Mindanawon artists, as well as Mindanao's rich culture and heritage amid the longstanding challenges that the island has faced, such as conflict, calamity, and marginalization.

Mindanao Art 2024 runs until October 6 at SM Lanang in Davao City.

Aside from its on-site event, Mindanao Art 2024 also has a virtual exhibition that can be viewed on MindanaoArt.org.
