5 things to do in October to get your culture fix
October is just around the corner and from the looks it, Metro Manila will be treated to a lot of cultural experiences. There are not-to-be missed theater treats, orchestra concerts, art exhibits and the list goes on.
Ahead of October, allow us to share some events so you can calendar them and plan your weekends accordingly.
1. Bar Boys: A New Musical. The musical about four lawyer hopefuls returns for a limited run beginning October 4. Adapted from Kip Oebanda's 2017 film for Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino, "Bar Boys: A New Musical" follows the life of four friends and their journey to become defenders of justice in the Philippines.
Mkye Salomon, who composed the adaptation's original songs, will serve as musical director, while Joelle Era will return for movement direction. "Bar Boys" will close Barefoot Theater Collaborative's successful 2024 season. October 4- November 3. Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater in Circuit Makati. Tickets start at P2,799. Tickets.
2. Manila Symphony Orchestra plays Beethoven
As part of Manila Symphony Orchestra's prestigious concert series, "In Pursuit of Excellence" the concert aptly titled "Beethoven" happening on Saturday, Oct. 5, will feature three rarely performed works of the revered German composer who famously suffered hearing loss.
The show will open with "Overture to King Stephen" and will end with Syphony No 3 in B-flat major. Distinguished solo pianist Mariel Ilusorio will perform the iconic Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, and renowned Russian conductor Alexander Vikulov will lead the MSO. 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5. 3. Request sa Radyo
The most-awaited theater show is here! Lea Salonga and Dolly De Leon will alternately perform the super limited run of Filipino adaptation of “Wunschkonzert” or “Request Program” by Franz Xaver Kroetz from Oct 10 to 20. It will be directed by Bobby Garcia,
"Request sa Radio" will only have 20 performances at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Makati City. The Thursday through Saturday shows feature a 7pm and a 9pm play time, while Sunday shows have a 6pm and an 8pm play time. Oct. 10-20. Samsung Performing Arts Theater, Makati. 4. A History of Hollows
On display at Tarzeer Pictures in Chino Roses in Makati, is "A History of Hollows" a one-woman exhibition by architect, musician, and visual artist Micaela Benedicto. It is her attempt to inhabit the mind of her mother, who had been suffering from memory loss. It's a deeply personal show, resulting from a couple off cruxes: Mic and her brother had to transfer their mom from the house in which she came of age to live closer to them and then later on, having to sell the apartment. 5. Amplify
Welcome to Ayala Museum's first art and music festival, a celebration of the museum's 50th anniversary. With artists like Sparkle star Zephanie, KZ Tandingan, Agsunta, theater actor Markki Storm, and the Manila Symphony Orchestra on the agenda, Amplify also aims to blend heritage and modern creative expression. There are talks on OPM at the Filipinas Heritage Library, Sketch Walks, shadow play and more. 9-11pm. Oct. 19. Ayala Museum. Tickets start at P850. Tickets.
