It may be raining cats and dogs out there, but not on the island!

"Once On This Island," a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, just started its Manila staging, thanks to local theater company 9 Works Theatrical.

From September 6 to September 29, the classic tale of the little girl Ti Moune will enchant theater fans with her love for her family, community, creatures, and life.

It stars Kapuso singer and Queendom Diva Thea Astley, who will play the lead role alternately with Angela Ken.

They will be joined by Sam Concepcion and Jef Flores as Daniel, Radha as Asaka, Lorenz Martinez as Papa Ge, Shiela Valderrama-Martinez and Jasmine Fitzgerald as Erzulie, Raul Montesa and Noel Rayos as Tonton Julian, Lani Ligot as Mama Euralie, Shanaia Gomez and Krystal Kane as Andrea, PJ Rebullida as Armand, Jonjon Martin, Sam Libao, Jordan Andrews, and Fay Castro as the Storytellers, and Bianca Estacio and Reese Iso as Little Ti Moune.

The show's director, Robbie Guevara, said the piece is a classic, to which everyone can relate, regardless of age.

The lead cast said they are very excited and proud to introduce the play to a larger audience.

It is based on Rosa Guy's 1985 novel "My Love, My Love" or "The Peasant Girl," which is a Caribbean reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid."

Among the notable songs in the show are "We Dance," "The Human Heart," "Waiting For Life," and "Forever Yours."

"Once On This Island" will be staged at the RCBC Plaza in Makati City. Ticket prices range from P2,200 to P3,900, available via Ticket2Me. —JCB, GMA Integrated News
