Studio Ghibli receives honorary Palme d'Or at 2024 Cannes film fest
Studio Ghibli has received the honorary Palme d'Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Goro Miyazaki, the son of Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki received the prestigious award during the 77th Cannes Film Festival that was held at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France on Monday.
In his speech, Miyazaki, a film director and the Creative Development Director of the Ghibli Park, credited the teams who have worked with Ghibli Studios all through the years, as well as their beloved fans.
“Ghibli was created 40 years ago by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and Tokuma Shoten. They are the studio's greatest contributors, but through this award I would like to associate all the work of the teams who have worked for us. The honor also goes to all those who have enjoyed our films. Thank you to all Ghibli fans!” he said.
The Golden Palm award is just the latest of big achievements by Ghibli Studios. Just this March, their semi-autobiographical fantasy tale about a boy grieving his dead mother, “The Boy and the Heron,” won the Best Animated Feature in Oscar.
The anime film also won the Best Animated Motion Picture at the Golden Globes, the first for a Studio Ghibli film.
It was also nominated for Best Animated Film at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards.
Founded in June 1985 in Tokyo by Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli is also known for its 2003 Oscar-winning "Spirited Away", as well as “Howl’s Moving Castle.”
