International Museum Day 2024: These museums offer free admission this weekend

It's International Museum Day tomorrow, May 18. Year in and year out, the global event celebrates the crucial role of museums as a means of cultural exchange and as spaces where enrichment of cultures, mutual understanding, cooperation, and peace can be fostered.
To mark International Museum Day, these museums in Metro Manila are opening their doors for free to the public. Aside from free entrance to exhibits, some have also cooked up exciting activities for all. See you there!
1. Ayala Museum
Bring your loved ones to Ayala Museum this Sunday because it's free admission to all the galleries and the Filipinas Heritage Library. Catch the update to the museum's permanent exhibit "Gold of Ancestors: Pre-colonial Treasures in the Philippines," as well as other mainstay exhibits like the "Ceramics and Cultural Currency: Exchanges of Pottery and Prestige," "Ayala Museum: In Microcosm," "Skeins of Knowledge, Threads of Wisdom," and "The Diorama Experience of Philippine History."
When: May 19, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

2. Yuchengco Museum
Yuchengco Museum, known for promoting the finest in Filipino and Filipino-Chinese visual arts, is free admission today and tomorrow! Catch exhibits spotlighting the artworks of National Artist Fernardo Amorsolo, writer and activist Carlos Bulosan, and artists Carlos Villa and Glenn A. Bautista.
When: May 17-18, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Where: G/F, RCBC Plaza, corner Ayala and Sen. Gil J. Puyat Avenues, Makati City
3. Casa Manila Museum and Museo de Intramuros
Casa Manila Museum in Plaza San Luis Complex and Museo de Intramuros are also free admission tomorrow, according to the Intramuros Administration. To avail of the free entrance, one must vote for Intramuros as Asia's Leading Tourist Attraction at the World Travel Awards.
Visitors must show the screenshot of their vote at the museums' entrance.
When: May 18, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. (Casa Manila Museum) and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (Museo de Intramuros)

4. AIMS Museo Maritimo
The Asian Institute of Maritime Studies' (AIMS) Museo Maritimo is the country's first ever maritime-themed museum. The museum postures itself as a center of maritime knowledge and history, and a tribute to the Philippines' archipelagic nature and the contribution of Filipino seafears to nationbuilding. Its collections include a manunggul jar, dioramas of the Old Port of Manila, fossils of the extinct Carcharodon megalodon, memorabilia from AIMS founder Captain Wilijado Abuid, and more.
When: May. 16-18, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

5. GSIS Museo ng Sining
The Museo ng Sining at the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) headquarters is also inviting the public to celebrate International Museum Day this weekend. The museum has prepared games and activities today and tomorrow, with exciting prizes to boot.
When: May 17, 12 p.m.-4 p.m. and May 18, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

6. Bahay Tsinoy
Bahay Tsinoy in Intramuros is also open to all on Saturday. Nestled within the building is the Kaisa-Angelo King Heritage Center, a lasting repository highlighting the historical and socio-cultural legacy of the Chinese in all aspects of Philippine life.
When: May 18, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Where: 32 Anda corner Cabildo Street, Intramuros, Manila City
For International Museum Day, Ateneo Art Gallery also offers a free ArtSpeak on May 18, from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. The talk, "Who do we write for? The Audience of Art Criticism," will be moderated by Lisa Ito-Tapang and will feature guests Eileen Legaspi Ramirez, Mariah Reodica, Jay Rosas, and Nicola Soriano Lao in celebration of the 10th year of the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prizes in Art Criticism.

For more museum-hopping, the National Museum of the Philippines in Ermita (Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.) and the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design in Malate (Monday to Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.) are always free to visit!
