‘Poor Things’: 3 important takeaways we got from the multi-awarded movie
“Poor Things” is now showing in Philippine theaters.
Starring Emma Stone, Mark Raffalo, Willem Dafoe, and Ramy Youssef, the multi-awarded film by director Yorgos Lanthimos, follows the story of a young woman brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist.
It's whacky and amusingly funny, with a peculiar Frankenstein-ish story line and a few disturbing touches. It's strange yes but not without important takeaways.
1. Learning is a continuous process
The film's main character, Bella Baxter is given a second chance in life. She needs to start off again with nearly blank canvas.
"Poor Things" showcases Bella's deep curiosity and her hunger to learn. Alongside Bella are other characters who, while Bella explores the world and her new life, also try to understand the young woman's learning process.
This reminds viewers that no matter what stage we are in life, whether we're trying to navigate a fresh start or even if we have already come a long way, we still learn things along the journey.
2. Truth hurts
Given that the main character had to reintroduce herself to the world, she had to digest a few hard truths, which, as we know, is not easy.
Despite this, "Poor Things" manages to showcase that no matter how difficult facing the truth can be, what matters is how we bravely go through it, liberating ourselves with what is real.
3. We're captains of our own ship
Just like a captain who steers his own ship, we are the rulers of our own bodies.
This movie is a great reminder that no matter how much society has to say about our decisions and what we do with our bodies, no one else but us can get to decide what is the right choice for our own ships.
