Miss Japan 2024 gives up her crown following affair

Ukraine-born Karolina Shiino who was crowned as Miss Japan 2024 gave up her crown following a report she was having an affair with a married man.

Shiino was crowned Miss Nippon's (Japan) Grand Prix 2024 pageant on January 22, 2024.

Following her win, a local weekly magazine, Shukuhan Bunshun published an article alleging the beauty queen was in a relationship with a married influencer doctor.

In a now-deleted statement, the pageant organizer said Shiino was not at fault because the man told her he was single.

Meanwhile, Shiino’s model agency Free Wave Co said she continued dating the married doctor despite learning of his real status.

According to the agency, Shiino initially lied because she was scared, but decided to tell the truth to avoid causing more trouble.

Shiino confirmed the allegations in a statement on Instagram saying: “There was some discrepancy between the facts and what I had explained to my agency. I was unable to speak the truth due to confusion and fear.”

She added she would be stepping down as Miss Japan 2024 and had requested that her agency terminate her contract.

The Miss Japan Association has already accepted her resignation “due to personal circumstances,” adding that the post of Miss Japan would remain vacant until the next contest.

Shiino was born in Western Ukraine. According to Japan Times, her mother married a Japanese national when Shiino was 5 years old and moved to Nagoya, Japan later on. In 2023, she announced that she was a naturalized Japanese citizen.

Shiino became the first person of European descent to win the Miss Japan Grand Prix.
