It's National Arts Month, here are 10 events to attend this February

It's finally February and National Arts Month, and what better way to celebrate the best of what artists have to offer than to immerse ourselves inside their creative imaginations? May it be through sketches, paintings, performances, the list goes on.

Here are 10 arts events happening across the Philippines this month.

1. Monet & Friends Alive, BGC - January 31 onwards

This immersive exhibit will bring you into Claude Monet's views of 19th-century Bohemian Paris and countryside France.

Titled "Monet & Friends Alive," guests will experience Monet's Impressionist paintings of nature and landscapes through screen projections and a musical score.

The space will also feature works by Impressionist painters Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, and more.

"Monet & Friends Alive" is done by the same team behind "Van Gogh Alive." 

"Monet & Friends Alive" opened on January 31 at the BGC Arts Center in Taguig City. Early bird tickets for the two-hour pass are available until February 4, priced at P760 and are available via Ticketworld and on-site. 2. 'Street Dreams: The Art of Pop Surrealism' exhibit, Mandaluyong City - February 1 to February 8

This exhibit will provide pieces that challenge established art forms.

"Street Dreams: The Art of Pop Surrealism" focuses on low brow, or pop surrealism which is a modern art movement that confronts traditions and norms. This genre draws inspiration from art forms such as popular culture, comics, graffiti, and surrealism.

The exhibit will feature works by 54 artists such as Garapata, Distort Monsters, Angelica So, Humbly, and many more.

"Street Dreams: The Art of Pop Surrealism" happens on February 1 to February 8 at 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Art Lounge Manila, Ground Floor, The Podium, Mandaluyong City.

3. Luneta Art Fair, Manila - February 3 and 4

The Luneta Art Fair is a two-day outdoor art festival that promises to feature up-and-coming artists, collectives, creative spaces, art schools, and galleries from the Philippines, who will sell and exhibit their works.

It will also exhibit traditional artworks like paintings, sketches, sculptures, collages, assemblages, and photography. Digital pieces such as prints and 3D-printed sculptures will also be put on display.

Luneta Art Fair is happening on February 3, Saturday and February 4, Sunday at Rizal Park in Ermita, Manila from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free.

4. Pasinaya: The CCP Open House Festival, Metro Manila, Davao, Iloilo - February 3 and 4

Pasinaya: The CCP Open House Festival is celebrating its 20th year all across the Philippines with events at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex in Pasay City, 14 museum and gallery partners around Metro Manila, plus various venues in Iloilo City, and venues in Tagum, Davao Del Norte.

There will also be events at the Power Mac Spotlight Blackbox Theater and Activity Center in Circuit Makati on February 4.

As in previous years, Pasinaya is a space for artists and cultural groups to showcase their talents, as well as a platform for art education and appreciation.

Attendees will be treated to free shows and workshops, and activities across art forms such as music, theater, dance, visual arts, film, and literature.

Pasinaya: The CCP Open House Festival is happening across the Philippines on February 3, Saturday, and February 4, Sunday. It will follow a pay-what-you-can scheme. Here are the full list of venues and activities.

5. Art Fair Philippines, Makati City – February 16 to 18

Art Fair Philippines is all set to bring the Philippine and international art scene together.

There is a wide variety of exhibitions and experiences that range from art exhibits, performance art, interactive pieces, poetry readings, murals, listening parties, and hangouts.

Ahead of the fair itself, 10 Days of Art runs from February 9 to 18. Happening all across Makati City, it is a way to bring and celebrate the best of Philippine contemporary art outside of The Link. It promises exhibits, design installations, and public art events.

Gallery Weekend happens from February 9 to 11, wherein the public is encouraged to visit various galleries in Makati. The full schedule and venues are up on 10daysofart.com.

Art Fair Philippines is happening from February 16, Friday, to February 18, Sunday at The Link Carpark in Makati City. Tickets are priced at P750 and are now available online and at the event itself. Concession and discounted tickets for students, PWDs, and senior citizens are also available on-site.

6. BLTX: Gong Xeroxography Fa Cai, Quezon City - February 17

Better Living Through Xeroxography or BLTX is holding one of their small press expos for a special Lunar New Year edition.

BLTX: Gong Xeroxography Fa Cai will feature independent publishers who will sell their zines—magazines made by rising creatives—stickers, prints, and many more. There will also be a zine library, chikahan forum, and brew-it-yourself coffee corner.

BLTX: Gong Xeroxography Fa Cai is happening on February 17, Saturday at Sikat Studio, Quezon City from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Entrance is free.

7. Graphika Manila, Pasay City – February 17 to 18

Graphika Manila is Asia's largest and most influential conference all about creativity that brings together design professionals and students.

Among the speakers are Lauren Tsai, Pixar Animation Studios, Friendly Foes, Acid House, Jethro Olba, and many more.

Graphika Manila happens on February 17, Saturday and February 18, Sunday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City. Tickets are priced at P2,980 and P2,780 for students.

8. ALT Philippines, Pasay City – February 21 to 25

ALT Philippines, the art fair that challenges views on art, is back for its third edition. It is known as an unconventional art event that aims to challenge the norms and offer a fresh perspective on Filipino art.

ALT gathers artists from nine Philippine galleries, which are Artinformal, Vinyl on Vinyl, The Drawing Room, West Gallery, Blanc, Finale Art File, MO_Space, Underground, and Galleria Duemila. The pieces range from moving images, performances, paintings, sculptures, photography, installations, sound, and new media.

ALT Philippines happens on February 21 to 25 at the SMX Convention Center Hall 4 in Pasay City, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are available on-site and online via SM Tickets, priced at P250.

9. National Commission of Culture and the Arts events, Metro Manila and Laguna - February 23

The National Commission of Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has a series of activities this National Arts Month.

The month's theme is "Ani ng Sining, Bayang Malikhain," which "seeks to encapsulate the notion that the bountiful harvest of a Filipino creative nation is drawn from the products of human imagination, not just of individuals but of people as a collective," NCCA said on Facebook.

The commission added, "A creative nation, Bayang Malikhain, embodies the idea of a Filipino society that places a high value on imagination, innovation, and artistic expression as integral components of our identity and progress. In a Bayang Malikhain, artistic endeavors are celebrated as essential contributions to the nation's development and cultural richness."

The NCCA celebrations will kick off on February 23 with an opening ceremony at Rizal High School in Pasig City with a series of talks, workshops, and performances, with more events to be announced. Updates will be posted on the NCCA social media pages.

10. Bobapalooza Music & Arts Festival, Muntinlupa City - February 24 and 25

Bobapalooza, dubbed the Philippines' grandest music and arts festival, is another much-awaited event, what with its four international headliners, two Filipino headliners, 16 OPM acts, and seven visual artists.

Headlining the first day are Pale Waves and Bad Suns, as well as Rico Blanco, Juan Karlos, The Itchyworms, ONE CLICK STRAIGHT, Nobita, Join The Club, Syd Hartha, and more.

The second day presents a lineup of Atarashii Gakko, The Band Camino, Urbandub, December Avenue, Sandwich, Chicosci, Tanya Markova, and more talented artists.

There will also be live art at the event by EGG FIASCO, Blic, Distort Monsters, SYN, mimaaaaaaaaw, CHNO, and Isad Diwa.

Bobapalooza Music & Arts Festival happens at the Filinvest Festival Grounds in Muntinlupa City on February 24, Saturday and February 25, Sunday. Tickets are available via SM Tickets and prices range from P4,599 to P14,799.
