Journalist's memoir among Barack Obama's favorite books of 2023
"Some People Need Killing," a memoir written by Filipina author and journalist Patricia Evangelista, has been included in former US president Barack Obama's favorite books of 2023.
In an Instagram post, Obama shared a list of 15 book titles, including "This Other Eden" by Paul Harding, "The Covenant of Water" by Abraham Verghese, and "The Maniac" by Benjamin Labatut.
"As I usually do during this time of year, I wanted to share my favorite books, movies, and music of 2023," the former US head of state wrote.
"Here are the books I've enjoyed reading. If you're looking for a new book over the holidays, give one of them a try. And if you can, shop at an independent bookstore or check them out at your local library," he added.
On Facebook, Evangelista said she is honored that her book is among Obama's best books of the year.
"I am humbled to be in the company of these astounding authors, and grateful to have been part of telling our story," she said.
Evangelista's debut nonfiction book delves into her experience covering former President Rodrigo Duterte's drug war campaign. The book was launched in October at Columbia University's Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma in New York.
"Some People Need Killing" was also included in the New York Times' "10 Best Books of 2023" and TIME Magazine's list of 100-must-read books of 2023.
