Quiapo Church to be declared a National Shrine in January 2024

The Quiapo Church, also known as the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, will officially be declared a “National Shrine” on January 29.

The Department of Tourism, Culture, and Arts of Manila made the announcement on Facebook Thursday.

“Viva Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno!” it wrote.

“The Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene will be solemnly declared a National Shrine on January 29, 2024,” it added.

In a separate post, the official Facebook page of Quiapo Church also confirmed the good news.

“We have officially received from the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines the Decree of Establishment as a National Shrine through Msgr. Bernando Pantin,” it wrote.

The Quiapo Church was elevated to an Archdiocesan Shrine in May and has been a minor basilica since 1987 due to its role in the devotion to Jesus Christ and its cultural impact on Filipino religious practices.

The Quiapo Church is known for the annual grand procession of the Black Nazarene or Traslacion every January 9.
