Student eats Maurizio Cattelan's iconic banana artwork in Seoul museum
An art student ate the famous banana artwork of Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul, South Korea.
According to a report on CNN, the student removed the fruit from the wall where it was duct-taped and proceeded to eat it because he was hungry.
After eating, he taped the banana peel back to the wall. The museum later changed it with a fresh banana.
"It happened suddenly, so no special action was taken. The artist was informed of the incident but he didn't have any reaction to it," a museum spokesperson told CNN.
The artwork is titled "Comedian" and got sold for $120,000 at Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2019.
It is currently on display as part of Cattelan's solo exhibition WE that will run July 16. The banana is replaced every two or three days.
The first edition of "Comedian" also got eaten by a performance artist, who called his action an "art performance."
