Lea Salonga set to return to Broadway for 'Here Lies Love,' a musical about the Philippines
Lea Salonga is back on Broadway!
She'll star in “Here Lies Love” for a limited engagement from July 11 to August 13 at New York City's Broadway Theatre, incidentally where Lea made her Broadway debut 30 years ago in "Miss Saigon."
“Here Lies Love” tells the story of Filipina first lady Imelda Marcos and the country’s history under her power.
Lea will play the role of Aurora Aquino, mother of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino.
"As a Filipino artist, I am incredibly excited that audiences will finally get to see — on Broadway — this beautiful, impactful, and important musical," Salonga said on Instagram.
Not only will the musical mark the first time Lea will play a Filipino role on Broadway, it also marks her debut as a producer.
Joining Lea are Conrad Ricamora and Jose Llana who will play Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino and Ferdinand Marcos, respectively.
"Here Lies Love" features music by Fatboy Slim and David Byrne, who also came up with the show. Alex Timbers will develop and direct it.
“Here Lies Love” will begin previews on June 17 ahead of an official opening night of July 20.
