Rizal drew shirtless image of himself in this sinaunang selfie

Philippine cities have made it to the list of selfie capitals of the world as Filipinos continue to snap solo, group, or 0.5 selfies.

But did you know that even our National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal himself once took a selfie?

Filipino public historian Ambeth R. Ocampo shared a self-portrait of Rizal on  Facebook, Sunday, showing him in his teens and without a shirt on.

"We all know Rizal in an overcoat. But in his youth, long before he became a National Hero, he took off his shirt, posed in front of a mirror, and drew a selfie," said Ocampo.

"If Rizal had a smartphone, he would not have drawn this, and Ambeth R. Ocampo would have no career," he quipped.

According to Ocampo, the image is a reproduction in Austin Craig's 1913 book, "Life, Lineage and Labors of Jose Rizal," with the original portrait believed to have been lost or destroyed during the 1945 Battle of Manila.
