Herlene Budol heartened by Pinoy bayanihan spirit in Uganda

Things might not have gone to plan, but Herlene Nicole “Hipon Girl” Budol still took home a special memory from Uganda.

Despite withdrawing from the controversial Miss Planet International, the beauty queen and comedienne said that what she has earned from her experience is worth so much more than the pageant crown.

“Dahil sa baon kong aral na natutunan,” Herlene said. “Napatunayan kong [sa oras] ng [pangangailangan, may Pilipinong mag dadamayan.]”

On Instagram, she posted a photo with the Filipino community in Uganda. They can be seen waving the Philippine flag.

“Kahit saang bansa panalo ang Pilipinas,” Herlene said. “[With] or without crown[,] I’m proud to a Filipina.”

During her time in Uganda, Herlene was also able to spend an inspirational time with kids.

Miss Planet International was supposed to be Herlene’s first international pageant, after placing first runner-up in Binibining Pilipinas and garnering seven special awards.

She withdrew “[due] to uncertainties by the organizers” and because the candidates were not treated well.

Prior to her withdrawal, Herlene’s national costume failed to make it to Uganda in one piece, causing distress.

Amid the controversy, Miss Planet International was rescheduled to January 2023. —Nika Roque/JCB, GMA Integrated News
