Did you know? Jose Mari Chan was among composers of ‘Mamang Sorbetero,' 'Ang Nobya Kong Sexy'
We all know that Jose Mari Chan is the King of Christmas Carols, but he’s definitely created more than just the English holiday jams.
In an episode of “The Howie Severino Podcast,” Jose Mari Chan said though he’s used to writing in the foreign language, among songs with his songwriting credit are top Tagalog hits you probably know since childhood.
We mean: He actually co-wrote Celeste Legaspi’s “Mamang Sorbetero” with Gryk Ortaleza — who happens to be Chynna Ortaleza's dad, mind — and Apo Hiking Society’s “Ang Nobya Kong Sexy” with Jim Paredes.
“I can express myself better in English," Jose Mari tells Howie Severino. "Tagalog is only my third language. My second is Ilonggo, Iloilo. So when it comes to Tagalog, I would rather get a collaborator, a co-writer."
Apart from these hits, the famous song writer also wrote commercial jingles, which surely have been you LSS at a one point in your life. Among these are for Alaska and Knorr.
“They would call me and say, ‘Joemari, we have this product. The tagline is this: Lasa’t lasa, walang tatalo sa Alaska. Can you put that to music?’” he narrated.
“I wrote also ‘There are Chinese soups, but there is nothing like Knorr Real Chinese Soup,’” he added.
Did you sing while reading or did you sing while reading the lines? Because we definitely sang while reading the lines.
Anyway, according to Jose Mari Chan, he doesn’t feel the need to let everyone know he’s behind these songs.
“Those songs are available on Spotify and I get royalty. That’s enough. I don’t really have to blow my horn like, ‘Hey. This is my song. This is my song.’”
And though he usually appears during the Christmas season only, it’s surely safe to say that he is among the country’s icons who’s given us songs for any occasion, including just a normal day. — LA, GMA News
