I-Witness documentary 'Mask Land' wins Silver Green Award in environmental film festival in France

Howie Severino's 2021 documentary, "Mask Land" won the Silver Green Award trophy in the Health and Living Environment category of the 11th Deauville Green Awards, an international film festival that honors the best of environmental reporting.

Among the 100 finalists from 500 entires around the world, "Mask Land" sheds light on the problem of ocean pollution due to single-use items like medical masks and plastics that became commonplace during the pandemic.

In the documentary, Severino learned that discarded face masks are a unique form of waste, with cheap surgical or medical masks comprising nearly all mask waste in the ocean.

The result is billions of masks polluting the environment, including the marine sanctuaries in Batangas.

Severino attended the awarding ceremony in Deauville, France on June 16, where the winning documentary was screened.
