'Jewel in the Palace' star Lee Young-ae donates 100 million won to Ukraine amid conflict with Russia
Korean actress Lee Young-ae donated one hundred million won (approximately $83,331) to Ukraine amid conflict with Russia, according to a Soompi report.
The report said Ukraine ambassador Dymtro Ponomarenko took to Twitter to share a letter and a check from Young-ae.
"We are very excited and touched by the letter and the great financial contribution of the famous Korean actress Lee Young Ae in support of Ukraine and the demand to end the war as soon as possible!" Dymtro wrote on Twitter.
The Ukraine ambassador said "the donations will be transferred to the needs of victims of Russian aggression.”
In Young-ae's statement, she said she empathizes with the people of Ukraine as someone who came from a family of veterans who went through war.
"I am Lee Young Ae, an actress living in Korea. As a family of veterans who went through war, I feel the horrors of the war more deeply than anyone else," she wrote.
"I sincerely hope that the war will stop and peace will be established in Ukraine as soon as possible, and I pray for the well-being and safety of all Ukrainian citizens," she added.
Young-ae also wrote words of encouragement for Ukrainians.
"Ukrainians, who love freedom and peace, I hope you don’t lose hope and courage!" she wrote.
"As a citizen of independent Korea who loves peace, I would like to convey my small but precious heart to the people of Ukraine," she added. "May God always bless you."
