These bike racks in Manila also serve as art installations

Some bicycle racks in Manila have been getting the public’s attention with their eye-catching designs.

According to Mav Gonzales’ “24 Oras Weekend” report, designer and artist Mark Pahate decided to make the racks unique as part of the Ride Safe campaign.

“We just thought it would be better for the safety of Manila, for the bikers, and for the program itself if we made them more attractive,” he said in a mix of English and Filipino.

“So what we did was combine it with art and make it into an art installation that is also functional,” he added.

The bike racks can be found in four areas. “Alon,” inspired by the Manila Bay and the sunset, is located at the Rajah Sulayman Park.

“Kalesa” is placed at Plaza Roma in Intramuros and pays tribute to the main mode of transportation in the tourist destination.

“Maya,” which looks like a bird’s wings, is at Liwasang Bonifacio, while the “Tabak” is housed at the Bonifacio Shrine.

As bicycle riding increases among the public due to the pandemic, Pahate hopes that they will continue to appreciate and care for these works of art. — Franchesca Viernes/BM, GMA News
