Malang’s granddaughter Isabel Santos wins grand prize at Uniqlo global shirt design contest
A granddaughter of award-winning Filipino artist Mauro Malang Santos has won the grand prize in Uniqlo’s global shirt design competition UT Grand Prix (UTGP).
Isabel Santos’ artwork titled “A Fortune in Jewels Kept in Your Safe” won first place at the 15th UTGP, which had the theme “Draw Your World” and was held in partnership with The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City.
The Filipino artist’s piece shows row after row of miniature heads and faces.
“I want to thank Uniqlo for giving artists an opportunity to share their works on a global scale,” said Isabel.
“I am so happy and honored that they chose me and my design. I still can’t believe it! Thank you to everyone who made it happen, especially my God, my family and my sons, Noah and Benny.”
Winning second place was Amandine Leforestier of USA, followed by Melissa Holstein of Germany.
Uniqlo’s collection featuring the winning designs will be available starting Feb. 26. Each shirt will cost $14.90 or around Php 790.
Isabel, who has staged exhibits in New York, Germany, and France, comes from a family of artists.
Aside from being the granddaughter of the late icon Malang, she is also a daughter of renowned artists Mona and Soler Santos. – RC, GMA News
