Catriona Gray stresses ‘Filipina’ after controversial introduction at Miss U Colombia pageant
Catriona Gray is reminding everyone once again that she is a true Filipina.
The 2018 Miss Universe titleholder just posted an IG story saying “Filipina” on top of a photo from the recent Miss Universe Colombia 2020 pageant where Catriona participated as a judge.
Several netizens paid close attention to this as the host of the pageant seemed to have introduced Catriona as “hailing from Australia but represented the Philippines after living for a few years there” in Spanish.
The production had also spelled her name as “Catriona Garay” on-screen.
While Catriona smiled for the camera throughout the introduction, her fans aired their dismay and came to her defense on social media.
“WTF? You can see Cat clearly not comfortable with the introduction,” one netizen had tweeted.
“Who wouldn't fake a smile if your last tame is like that. You've been introduced as ‘Australian by birth but represented Philippines after living for a few years there’,” said another.
Catriona Gray, who was born in Queensland, Australia, moved to the Philippines at the age of 18.
Her mother, Normita Magnayon, is a Filipina who hails from Albay while her dad, Ian Gray, is an Australian who was born in Scotland.
After winning the 2018 Miss Universe crown for the Philippines, an Australian media outlet referred to the beauty queen as “our crowning glory” and crossed out the word “Philippines” on the front page.
