A remix of Ryan Cayabyab's 'Da Coconut Nut' finds itself in the middle of a dance craze
"Da Coconut Nut" may have been released decades ago but the Ryan Cayabyab song continues to find new audiences to this day.
A remixed version of the OPM song is giving a rum commercial that upbeat, tropical feel.
Partnering with Malibu Caribbean Rum, American DJ and producer Dillion Francis has remixed the Pinoy hit song for the rum's #TheCoconutChallenge, a new dance challenge that's set to get everybody grooving.
According to Francis, the Ryan Cayabyab hit "is the perfect lighthearted anthem for summer vibes." He hopes that his remix of the song and the accompanying dance challenge "can provide a moment of reprieve while everything in the world still seems so uncertain."
His remix of "Da Coconut Nut" is 2:13 minutes long and features escalating beats and banging drops common in club ditties. It can get a tad too rowdy to be honest, but the American DJ has thankfully included a sample of the song's signature malunay licks, allowing Pinoys to recognize the most beloved song.
The global team of Malibu acquired the licensing for the song and on its website, called "Da Coconut Nut" an "internet classic."
"Da Coconut Nut" certainly has new-found fame on the internet 30 years after it was released. It went viral in 2017 after a Men's Choir performed it aboard an Emirates flight from Kenya to the US to thank the crew.
Mr. C couldn't believe that the video clip reached 10M views in three short days.
This time around, his has become the basis of the dance challenge, which has interested participants interpreting Matt Steffanina's dance moves to the beat of the song. To join, they have to post their clips on Instagram using the hashtag #TheCoconutChallenge.
For each post containing the hashtag from netizens in the US and Canada, Malibu will donate $1, on top of the initial $150,000 donation to the Nation Urban League to support African American-owned businesses in the US.
