This app will teach you how to write indigenous Kapampangan script ‘Kulitan’

A Kapampangan has proudly developed an application to raise awareness about the ancient Kapampangan writing system “Kulitan.”

According to a report on “Stand for Truth” on Monday, Keith Manaloto, a software engineer, said he developed “Learn Kulitan” to bring the writing system into the digital age.

“Ginawa ko itong app and font dahil gusto kong makuha ang interes nila. Cool siyang tingnan. Para ito lang ang vertical writing system sa Pilipinas at tsaka hindi mo ito mahihiwalay sa Kapampangan language,” Manaloto said.

“Sana maging aware ang mga Kapampangan na nag-e-exist ito at sana gamitin nila,” he added.

Kulitan is the indigenous Kapampangan script that has survived since the 1300s.

Meanwhile, amid the lockdown, a teacher conducted a Kulitan online workshop for free to keep the writing system alive.

Jayvie Aboyme said some of his participants even came from the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

“Marami ring time ang mga tao ngayon eh like ‘yong iba, nagluluto o kung anuman. Nakakatuwang malaman na marami pa rin talagang interesado sa kultura natin at willing silang matuto,” Aboyme said.

“Pinapakita nito kung paanong nabuhay pa rin ito through the years despite ng colonial past natin,” he added.
