'Game of Thrones' author George R.R. Martin hopes to finish ‘Winds of Winter’ by 2021

George R.R. Martin hopes to finish the sixth book in his “A Song of Ice and Fire” saga by next year.

In a blog posted on Tuesday, the “Game of Thrones” author revealed he has made “steady progress" on “The Winds of Winter” after spending the past few months in a cabin in the mountains amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“If nothing else, the enforced isolation has helped me write,” Martin wrote.

“I am spending long hours every day on The Winds of Winter, and making steady progress. I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week. But no, this does not mean that the book will be finished tomorrow or published next week,” he added.

Martin said “The Winds of Winter” is going to be “huge book,” so he still had “a long way to go.”

Martin shared that he was “heartbroken” after having to cancel his trip to Wellington, New Zealand for the World Science Fiction Convention, but noted there was still a “silver lining” to this cloud.

“The last thing I need right now is a long interruption that might cost me all the momentum I have built up. I can always visit Wellington next year, when I hope that both COVID-19 and The Winds of Winter will be done,” the author said.

Martin also gave some updates on “other things going on" in his life, including the “Game of Thrones” prequel, “The House of the Dragon.”

“Hollywood has slowed to a crawl thanks to the pandemic, but The House of the Dragon is still flying along wonderfully, thanks to Ryan Condal and his writers, and the tireless Ti Mikkel,” the author said.

HBO confirmed the news about a prequel last year, saying it will be based on Martin’s ”Fire and Blood,” book. It tells the history of House Targaryen, the family of the dragon-riding queen Daenerys from the original hit series.

"Winds of Winter" is the sixth book of the series. Martin earlier confirmed that a seventh book, "A Dream of Spring" is also planned. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
