5 reasons to watch 'Beautiful: The Carole King musical'

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Atlantis Productions is bringing “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” This is its second offering for its landmark year, and if "Angels in America" (Atlantis' first offering for its 20th year) is any indication, this is going to be good.

Running from June 14-July 7 at the Meralco Theater in Pasig, this is the first time the Tony-winning award play will be staged in the country and already, we are excited.

We mean, that’s Carole King! Goddess of Pop, a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and really, a music influencer of all time.

It premiered in San Francisco in 2013 and went on to conquer Broadway and London's West End.

In case you’ll need more convincing than this enthusiastic stamp of approval, see below:

1. “Beautiful” is critically acclaimed. It has under its belt, a Tony award, a Grammy award, and an Olivier Award.

2. It’s richly rewarding. It’s a jukebox musical – one you won’t be able to help but sing along to. But while the music is incredibly entertaining, the play will reveal Carole King’s genius. You’ll be informed that songs you know and love so dearly — songs you’ve encountered, say in Ally McBeal or have credited to someone else — were actually written by her!

3. The songs’ backstories are incredible. Because it is about Carole King and her prolific career, her songwriting processes will be revealed, and in some circumstances, even the situations that inspired the songs. Watch yourself because suddenly, the songs will mean something more.

4. We get a super talented cast! Playing Carole is Kayla Rivera, winner of David Foster Star Search, and Nick Varricchio, who previously appeared in “Saturday Night Fever” and “A Chorus Line.”

5. Bobby Garcia will be directing the Manila production. To add to the awards the play has won previously, we're talking about Bobby Garcia here, a three-time Aliw awardee. — LA, GMA News
