Posthumous Pulitzer awarded to Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin became the first woman to be honored with a special citation by the Pulitzer Prizes, when the Queen of Soul was posthumously honored by the foundation on Monday (Tuesday, PHL time) for "her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades."

Franklin died last August from pancreatic cancer at 76 years old.

The Pulitzer Prizes has awarded citations since 1930, and last gave one to singer Hank Williams in 2010.

The organization also awarded the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal for their separate investigations into President Donald Trump and his family. — Reuters
