BenCab's hats: A mortarboard plus a collab with Secret Fresh and New Era Caps

National Artist for Visual Arts Benedicto "BenCab" Cabrera took the phrase "a man of many hats" to a literal level these past few weeks.

On August 24, BenCab wore a mortarboard as he was was conferred the honorary degree Doctor of Humanities, Honoris Causa by the University of the Cordilleras (UC) during its 72nd Commencement Exercises.

"As residents of these mountains and valleys, it is important that we acknowledge and respect this shared heritage [and] making sure that our environment is protected is equally important," he was quoted as saying in his speech via a statement shared with the press.

This respect for heritage is prominent in his works, most of which is available on view in his museum in Baguio.

In addition to his works that highlight the beauty of the Cordilleras, BenCab is also known for his muse, Sabel.

The iconic character, inspired by a real-life scavenger he photographed and sketched in 1965, is featured in a collectible apparel produced in partnership with Secret Fresh and New Era Caps.

On Thursday, Secret Fresh advised collectors that they are launching "a highly collectible set of three caps featuring the Philippine flag colors and showcasing the Artist’s iconic character, Sabel."

"Each cap has intricate decorative stitching and includes gold tone pin accents. These limited edition sets will come with a numbered authenticity card and a pine wood display box," they added.

The set goes for a cool P39,000 and drops on September 30, 2018. — AT, GMA News
