'Ghoul' stars get introduced to Philippine mythical creatures
Diwata, manananggal, surpanakha.
It's a little early for Halloween but we were in Mumbai, India interviewing Bolloywood stars Radhika Apte and Manav Kaul, headlinrs of Netflix's first original Indian horror miniseries "Ghoul", and couldn't help but get into a conversation about mythology. Of course we had to bring up our own.

Radhika (who plays Nida Rahim) and Manav (as Col. Sunil Dacunha) were surprised to hear about our very own mananggal, described as a beautiful woman, whose body gets cut in half at night, transforms into a monster, and flies out for pregnant women to devour.
"This is a story by itself!" Manav reacts, while Radhika wonders where the myth of mananaggals comes from.
Manav explains Indian mythology has a similar creature called Surpanakha.
"So there’s a character in Ramayana, Surpanakha, she looks very very beautiful and she wants to seduce Ram, and she comes, and Lakshman, Ram’s brother, cuts her nose, and she turns into like, very scary, a witch. Which I think is very very bad, I don’t like this story, you can’t cut off someone’s nose man!"
As we told them about tiyanaks, innocent babies that turn into monsters and eat people, and our diwatas, Mana tells us about Vikram Aur Betaal, his favorite Indian myth.
